The aim of this project is to improve the comparability and selection of spatial optimisation algorithms through the design, testing, and publication of spatial optimisation benchmarks. The developed benchmarks will be tested on case studies in spatial planning and economic geography. Starting date is October 1st, 2024.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to lead a participatory modelling study that analyses the vulnerability of Spanish rural communities to the compounded effects of climate change, depopulation and agricultural trade, and explores the feasibility and effectiveness of vulnerability mitigation policies.

Deadline: 31th of January

The aim of the proposed Ph. D. project is to develop and evaluate alternative scenarios for spatially dispersed Net Zero lifestyles that entail viable rural communities and economies; with the viability being demonstrated through spatial agent-based social simulation. The following research questions could be investigated in pursuit of this aim, though the student will be encouraged to develop these questions themself:

  1. How does simulating social complexity affect findings from spatial […]

3 PhD positions are available within the project “Optimal N for future agricultural landscapes: digital technologies to optimize tradeoffs”. The project aims at developing predictive tools to support site specific crop N management for optimal delivery of ecosystem services related to N. The project is composed of three sub-projects, with respective focuses on process understanding; upscaling; and predictive modelling.

Seeking researcher with skills in agent-based modelling of agricultural systems and/or networks for a project on traders as connectors and mediators across scales. The position is part of an ERC project that combines empirical research with modelling to identify mechanisms of persistence and change in social-ecological systems. The research involves collaboration with interdisciplinary team of empirical researchers, modellers and philosophers at Stockholm Resilience Centre (www.seslink.org).

The Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture’s Modelling Systems Team is searching for a PhD student starting in 2020 to work on spatial analysis of agricultural land intensification. This project expands multi-disciplinary knowledge of the trade-offs between the biophysical, social, and economic components of agricultural spatial analysis by exploring the context in which cropping intensity can be a solution for sustainable agriculture.
