Vibrant, multidisciplinary and innovative, the Faculty of Arts and Science is one of Université de Montréal’s largest faculties. Through its 29 departments, schools, centres and institute, it offers over 300 programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, some of which are unique in Quebec. The Department of Geography is recognized for its excellence in teaching and research in the fields of human and physical geography, with an interdisciplinary approach and a strong focus on geospatial and environmental sciences. The department has first-rate research infrastructures, such as remote sensing and geographic information systems laboratories, located in the new UdeM science complex.

The successful candidate’s file could be proposed for an IVADO professorship if their research program is in line with the IVADO objectives and environmental big data. These positions offer improved starting conditions. The incumbents will participate in the ambitious project (IAR3) aimed at the development and adoption of robust, reasoned and responsible artificial intelligence for which IVADO obtained a Canada First Research Excellence grant.

Your day-to-day impact   : Through your teaching and your research activities, you will play a pivotal role in fostering excellence within your faculty. Furthermore, you will enhance the prominence of your area of expertise and actively participate in the daily activities of our renowned university. In this role, your responsibilities will include: 

• Teach at the undergraduate and graduate level and actively participate in maintaining the high standards of our program, participating in the implementation of various pedagogical strategies. You will also mentor graduate students;
• Develop a high-level research program integrating innovative approaches in remote sensing of the environment to explore new research horizons. Your field of research could be, but not limited to, themes such as microwave, hyper-spectral or thermal remote sensing image analysis, geospatial and big data analysis, or artificial intelligence applied to the development of smart and sustainable cities and environmental studies. Your program should have a strong modeling and/or observation component having the potential for significant impact;
• Contribute to the functioning and development of the department, faculty, and institution by participating in committees and taking part in scientific and social activities;
• Participate in activities to promote the discipline, including publications, conferences, and other initiatives.

What you’ll need to succeed  :
* Have a PhD in geography or a related discipline. Applications from people who are in the final stages of thesis writing will also be considered;
Have an excellent publication record in the field of remote sensing;
Demonstrate an ability to provide high-quality teaching at the university level and potential for supervising graduate students;
* Demonstrate a potential to establish internal, national and international collaborations;
* Adequate proficiency in the French language or a strong commitment to mastering the proficiency level required upon assuming the position in accordance to Université de Montréal’s Language Policy. A French language learning assistance program is offered to all professors who wish to acquire French language skills or enhance their communication abilities.
