EPSRC DTP PhD studentship in Many Objective Optimisation for Simulation in Manufacturing

Brunel University London (BUL) is recruiting to EPSRC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) PhD studentships effective 1 October 2020. Applications are invited for the following specific project entitled “Many Objective Optimisation for Simulation in Manufacturing”. Successful applicants will receive an annual stipend (bursary) of £17,285 plus payment of their full-time home tuition fees for a period of 36 months (3 years). Applicants must be eligible for home tuition fees either through nationality, residency (living in the UK for at least three years and not wholly for educational purposes) or other connection to the UK.

The successful applicants will join the internationally recognised researchers in the Department of Computer Science. The study of how optimization over the full manufacturing systems lifecycle can be advanced using phase-wise, many-objective optimization (PWMOO). In particular it will attempt to develop a novel algorithm for PWMOO by leveraging High Performance Computing and particle swarm optimization. The research will be carried out with Saker Solutions, a leading company in manufacturing systems analysis, and will use Saker’s high performance computing system (SakerGrid).

Applicants will be required to demonstrate their ability to develop complex optimization software running on high performance computing architectures. Applicants will also be expected to periodically work in an industrial setting and carry out their work in a professional manner. Applicants will be expected to document their work at a high standard (e.g. thesis writing and co-writing of publications).

Please contact Professor Simon J E Taylor at simon.taylor@brunel.ac.uk or Dr Anastasia Anagnostou at anastasia.anagnostou@brunel.ac.uk for an informal discussion about the studentships.

This is a College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences: EPSRC Funded DTP PhD Studentship.

Eligibility
Applicants will have or be expected to receive a first or upper-second class honours degree in an Engineering, Computer Science, Design, Mathematics, Physics or a similar discipline. A Postgraduate Masters degree is not required but may be an advantage.

Experience in an enterprise computing language such as Java or C++ as well as shell scripting, potentially some experience in optimization or high-performance computing (e.g. demonstrated through a final year project or dissertation) is an advantage. In addition, he/she should be highly motivated, able to work in a team, collaborate with others and have good communication skills.
