Job Description
The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and its Maryland based Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI) seek a software scientist/engineer to support the development and application of Earth-human systems models, including the development and integration of multiple global and regional models of energy, water, land, and related systems. The assignment location is flexible, based on the candidates’ choice, to be either in Richland, Washington or College Park, Maryland; however, the incumbent is expected to work closely with modeling experts on both locations. The anticipated tasks will include;
• Developing interfaces to connect different model components and/or different scientific models;
• Implementing, debugging, and evaluating new codes;
• Performing simulations to support model development, testing and their use in scientific investigations;
• Processing simulation input/output and observational data;
• Contributing to dissemination of scientific findings of modeling studies;
• Maintaining and managing code repositories for community models
It will be essential for the candidate to have the ability and interest to develop and maintain robust, clean, and easily maintainable codes and scripts. Teamwork and strong interpersonal communication skills for engaging with project teams at PNNL (including teams based in Richland and in College Park), at other national laboratories, and with the broader research community are also essential.
It is anticipated that the successful candidate will work on multiple projects with varying modeling needs and tasks. Familiarity with a range of models will be advantageous in finding a better fit between the candidate’s skills and the projects’ needs. The tasks will be assigned to best match the successful candidate.
Minimum Qualifications
BS/BA with 2 years of experience; MS/MA with 0 years of experience; PhD with 0 years of experience
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, a Physical Science, or Engineering with 10 years’ experience, Master’s Degree in Mathematics, a Physical Science, or Engineering plus 5+ years’ experience; or PhD with 4+ years’ experience. Preference will be given to those with training or experience in Earth-human systems models. The applicant must be a technical expert who selects and widely applies principles, theories and concepts in a major field of specialization.
Experience:
o Demonstrated experience and knowledge with computer models such as Global Change Assessment Model (GCAM); Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM), Integrated Multi-scale Multi-sector Modeling (IM3)
o Fluency in two or more of the following: Fortran, C, C++, and Python/shell scripting;
o Complex codes designed for scientific computing;
o High-performance computing environments;
o Data analysis and visualization software;
o Familiarity with Git or other version control software;
o Understanding of the numerical modeling techniques used in environmental sciences;
o Strong interpersonal communication skills;
o Strong team player with the willingness and ability to work independently
