Simulation Lead - Sr. Liaison - ALSAC St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

  1. Uses a high degree of concentration to plan, develop, build, test, validate and operate multiscale agent-based simulation models for a variety of nonlinear, time-based problems within ALSAC, drawing on a current inventory of predictive models as well as exploratory work. Multiscale agent-based simulation models for strategic and/or tactical applications in Java or C++ produce system-level financial and other outputs (metrics, forecasts) based on (a) consumer econometrics, algorithms, and choice rules; (b) algorithmic and rule-based rendering of competitive market participants; (c) modeling of strategic or operational choices of the enterprise (e.g. – advertising); and (d) exogenous forces (e.g. – economic conditions, unemployment, etc.). Perform calibration, verification, validation testing of multiscale agent-based simulation models through experiments and applications. Apply these models to challenging business problems to directly influence managerial decision making to produce superior financial outcomes and to optimize allocation of resources. Using statistical software (R or SPSS) or other packages, derive stochastic algorithms as inputs to agents within simulation models as required. Involves working in an established office environment under normal lighting and climate control tolerances.

  2. Plans, develops, applies and tests autonomous and self-directed agents of varying levels of complexity, from simple if-then rules to multi-model, behaviorally-adaptive agents described by complex behavioral models from the fields of cognitive science, artificial intelligence, or other fields (e.g. – the Consumat approach). Agents include households and their members, enterprises to which household members may belong or those enterprises that participate in the market, corporate partners, co-marketers and other partners, as well as other market participants. Common agent interaction protocols include agent recognition; communication and information exchange; influence; and other domain or application-specific mechanisms. Familiarity and experience with Repast Symphony toolkit suite for Java and Repast for High Performing Computing in C++, NetLogo and StarLogo is highly important for this position. Familiarity with Repast, Swarm, AnyLogic, MASON and other large-scale (Scalable) Agent Development Environments is highly important for this position. Plans and works with consultants and subcontractors in Agent-based modeling as required, including drafting functional specifications to support third-party agent-based model development.

  3. Working in collaboration with other members of the Center of Excellence in Analytics, provides run cases and in-depth analysis of model output at a system and discrete level for important variances and trends for fundraising and internal divisions, for use in discussion and strategic planning with senior management. Work with Continuous Improvement, internal division and fundraising to parameterize, model and predict the root cause of unexpected variances, which oftentimes must be incorporated as risks in strategic models. Perform risk analysis based on historical trends and prospective opportunities, test risk mitigation techniques via multiscale agent-based modeling to evaluate the operational and financial outcomes, and recommend alternatives to Executive Officers. Requires use of a personal computer, as well as keen facility with databases and server environments.

  4. Prepares analysis, reports and presentations for Executives on a variety of model outputs ranging from financial trends in the marketplace to the influence of trends in consumer behavior, the nonprofit sector and the global economy, as well as the significant boundary conditions or “corner cases” and their associated implications (e.g., high-risk conditions). Will work with Senior Director of Analysis and Planning, the Executive Director of the Center of Excellence in Analytics and Executive team to drive recommendations on long-term enterprise strategies and associated tactics, risks, and risk mitigation programs.

  5. As part of the Center of Excellence in Analytics, works with all divisions on major analysis programs to uncover and model processes in opaque and highly nonlinear systems. Keen understanding and application of the mechanics of stochastic processes, demographics and probability density distributions of wealth and income, econometrics and consumer choice as well as the principles of valuation for assessment of opportunity cost and economic damages for the pricing of risk are important aspects of this position.

  6. Works with the Center of Analytics and the Finance team on special assignments as requested by fundraising units, senior staff members, executive leadership team members or the executive office. In some cases, the role of the Senior Liaison will be as the leader of special projects.

  7. Provides guidance and training to senior and junior staff members on building and operating agent-based models, when and what type of agent-based model might be appropriate (e.g. – aspatial, geographic, network topology, etc.), and how planning and implementation would proceed. Assists senior leadership in developing strategies to maximize the effectiveness of their division.

Knowledge - Requires thorough knowledge Multiscale Agent-Based Modeling theory, construction and application, especially in a marketing and sales operational environment, as rendered in a Java or C++ environment. Job knowledge is substantially more than an expert Java or C++ Developer, which is a necessary skill for this position. Job knowledge includes, but is not limited to full literacy with psychological and behavioral choice models; consideration set modeling; consumer behavior and decision-making; financial choice models; economics/econometrics as applied at the consumer and group level; and decision science principles. Requires deep knowledge and experience with financial, consumer and other data, including but not limited to analysis and interpretation of financial documents, operational and econometric data; event data analysis; stochastic process modeling using simulation for predictive modeling. Must have experience in building strategic alliances with strong interpersonal skills so as to enable multifunctional team working in heavily data-driven problem analysis involving marketing, consumer behavior, economics, econometrics, finance, and fundraising operations. Expert knowledge of MS Office Suite, statistical packages such as SPSS, R or SAS, SQL and related tools (Powerflex, etc.), Crystal Ball, Repast Symphony toolkit suite for Java and Repast for High Performing Computing in C++, NetLogo and StarLogo, AnyLogic or other Simulation Programs is required. Successful candidate must have excellent problem solving and organizational skills; well-honed ability to publicly speak, write and present persuasively and clearly on very abstract problems for internal/external relations; ability to train others on complex modeling and mathematical concepts; ability to think strategically and derive strategic direction based on business, marketing, consumer and demographic trends internally and externally; and ability to understand complex verbal or written instructions. Must have demonstrated experience planning and working with consultants and subcontractors in Agent-based modeling as required, including drafting functional specifications to support third-party agent-based model development. Job knowledge ordinarily acquired through a Master’s Degree in Business Administration with emphasis in computer science plus 10+ years of proven experience in multiscale agent-based modeling, stochastic modeling and predictive modeling for complex systems where in-depth analysis and interpretation are required. MBA or MSCS required. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Mental - Requires relatively high degree of concentration and attention to assist in the transformation of ALSAC to a data-driven analytic culture; long periods of mental effort and concentration are needed, followed by few projects with lesser concentration and attention requirements. Must be able to work well under pressure and manage multiple projects at a time. (essential job functions 1 - 8)
