The struggling merchants is a game to elicit reflections and learn about Complementary Currencies (CC). The idea of the game is to invite people to propose questions and arguments that a person could consider when deciding how to behave in a market, all this in the context of Complementary Currencies. The idea is to get people to learn about key concepts of CC, while recognizing the multiplicity of realities and how complex and context dependent is a decision process.
However, this is a research-oriented game therefore qualitative data is being gathered while conducting the game. The objective of this game is to stat gathering variables for a utility function that will guide the learning algorithm in the ABM; identify, how people conduct decisions based on limited information; identify concepts in CC that need to be better explained.
Introductions to Complementary Currencies by Juan Ocampo (Lund University)
A brief introduction on his research project: Organising money, engineering markets and the challenges of the planned field work. His research asks how does monetary design affect behaviors inside a community and how does communities socio-cultural relations influence the monetary design.
Interactive roleplay
The simulation of a research design that combines a storytelling game and an ABM. In this interactive part of the session, assistants will play the roles of struggling merchants and imagine, create, and tell their market stories. Later we these stories will inform an ABM that will be demonstrated to the audience.
Discussion - Moderates Melania Borit (The Norwegian College of Fishery Science)
A discussion about the Community Currency storytelling game, the ABM, the methodological setup, lessons learned from the simulation and how to further the exploration of Community Currencies.
